Tears for Iphigenia

Tears for Iphigenia

A Poem by Alexa Tarvid
"

Agamemnon received the winds to sail his thousands of ships to Troy but at what cost did the king have to pay?

"

My daughter,

My beautiful daughter,

Head in my hands,

My hands,

You have brought this on,

Such a straight shot you carry,

To take the life of the stag

Artemis held dear,

I only wished to be a hero,

A leader for the legends,

But accepting the call of my brother

Has only led me to destruction,

My daughter,

My dear daughter,

Tears fall on my rings,

The rings of a king,

Will I ever hold you again?

What will you look like when you die?

Will your eyes hold my betrayal?

Will your hands reach out to your father?

Hands in the grip of a fist

How dare he expect me to do such a thing?

That is my child,

MINE!

This is his war,

His wicked bride,

Why must I…

Why must I kill my child?

For a wind to set us sailing,

So we can become victorious,

The Gods,

You carry such twisted ways,

We will succeed indeed,

But with her blood on my hands,

Such a beautiful young woman she is,

Such a glorious bride she would be,

My daughter,

My lovely daughter,

Please take pity on your father,

For his brother

Has twisted his mind to your fate,

My daughter,

My Iphigenia,

Please,

Forgive me…

Forgive me.
