They Think

So many people think life is about what money you don't have,
And the money you don't need,
They think it's about the couple holding hands,
Or the husband that's sleeping on the couch,

But to me,
That's not life,
Life is about the family that no matter what they have,
They aren't poor until that family is lost,
It's about the couple that holds each other for the last time,
Because the boyfriend is being shipped to Iraq,
Life is about that husband that had to be told by the doctor to go home,
But it didn't feel right to him sleeping in his bed without his wife there with him,

Some think that life is about your family history,
Or how famous you are,
They think that it's about how well you can play a sport,
Or how many guys or girls you can get in one night,

But to me,
That's not it either,
It's about that old man who saves that  lost young man,
Just by telling this boy his life story,
Life is about that big sister who watches over her little brother,
No one makes fun of him being slow because they know she's got his back,
It's about that one girl who can solve all the problems in the world,
If only people stopped and listened to her,

So many people think life can be minimized or maximized,
They think it can be manipulated or controlled,
But it can't be,
Life is everything beautiful and ugly in this world,
But because of life,
A beautiful flower can come from a thorny bush.
 

Author's Note

I wrote this poem two years ago. It's hard to believe that for me because that would put me at the age of 14. But even though I have changed a great amount since that time, this poem still makes more sense than anything I've ever written.
