A Night of NumbingA Poem by Askew
It's a numbing kind of night.
Those eventual uneventful evenings That every girl eventually experiences. You don't laugh And you don't cry. Your family is smiling together But you hide in your room. Your favourite show you've seen More times than you can count. Your poetry book Stocked full of your secrets. Your beautiful pen That makes you feel strong. Your comfiest and softest clothing That hold you like a hug. These things That you have created for yourself, They make you feel loved By yourself. But it's distant, A muted kind of feeling. You can't feel it now But their warmth will hold you Through your nightmares. A nonsensical kind of numbness Numbing you nonsensically On and on through the night. Evidently the eventual uneventfulness explain in every eventful way Why us girls feel the feelings We are forever feeling.
