What I Want

What I Want

A Poem by Askew

Cracking my knuckles,
As my coffee becomes cold.
Sitting among my peers,
A teacher lecturing without speaking
And all I can think of
Is how much I want.
From a book in my hands
To blankets pulled up to my chin,
From a mans hands on my body
To never being touched again,
From being wrapped in someones arms
To feeling protected.
I want it all.
I have enough
But it's never enough.
I'm always wanting more.
I'm called selfish,
And I don't deny it.
I'm constantly wanting
What I'll never have.
When I get what I want
It's a rare occasion.
When I get what I want
It leaves me wanting more.

i feel you Lexi ...I am old and long passed the passions of wanting that enigmatic "something" that will do the trick ...its elusive as faeries and leprechauns ;) I wan tot say to your speaker ..its ok...keep your head about you ...be safe and its not the arriving ..its the striving that counts .. one of my favorite authors to quote is Dale Carnegie .. and he shares this age old wisdom in one of his books .. " The only mistakes we make are those we persist in" ;)
your poem is so very young ...be well my new friend ..i am enjoying reading your voice

Tis a haunting write, Lexi, perhaps. Part cynical, part desperate. Maybe two women under one skin, perhaps two minds still trying to isolate one from the other? Whatever, whichever, is - yes, a haunting write.

.. .. maybe leaving your readers wanting more.

Good poetry. Your words flowed easily creating a natural balance. Reminds me of a poem that would be shared in a smokey coffee house in the 50's. Has a feel of the beat generation.

This poem is savage. I was confused while reading, don't know what to think or where to stand. I like such kind of poetry. Strong, hungry, and original. Thank you for sharing.
