It Wouldn't Be the First TimeA Poem by LetheWhen being just friends is just too comfortable for comfort.
I wouldn't be surprised
If you came to me tonight With a sheepish grin And the name of the next girl to mistake your heart for a sidewalk It wouldn't be the first time you read her signs wrong And I would tell you so After sitting through all the details (almost) patiently But that wouldn't stop you From planning to wear your favorite striped polo When you try to walk her to class tomorrow (Or your cheeks from flushing as you deny this) It wouldn't be the first time you got your hopes up Or the first time you butchered my favorite Snow Patrol song But I wouldn't have the heart to tell you When it would be the first time your smile reached your eyes Since the last one broke it (after she broke your bank) I would knock the banana microphone out of the same hands That would clammily reach for hers tomorrow And wonder why this couldn't be enough for you And if you asked whether the cat was the only one to catch my tongue I would ask if you wanted to catch it too Because it wouldn't be the first time you read my signs wrong (Even if my laugh is a half-step too flat) I wouldn't be surprised If you scrunched your nose, frustratingly cute as ever, And just said "no." But it'd still hurt. Love must be blind If you could go on chasing heartaches Without seeing that I'm just a girl, standing in front of a boy... So if you tickled me until I begged for mercy And gasped, "I hate you!" It would be the first time I meant it. © 2010 LetheAuthor's Note
