The Tree Cutters

The Tree Cutters

A Poem by Leslie Philibert
"

not just about trees

"
Roadside trees falling to the bottom of the sea,
orange moonmen with profiles of edges and plastic,
buzz like angry bees, so I crouch lost and wordless
in the middle of the earth,
under the forest, under moss, behind roots,
but having small stones thrown into my eyes,
am unable to look upwards,
standing ashamed in my fern grave,
trucks rumble past, even a massacre of pigs
would leave them unconcerned, runed,
coloured with the names of distant places,
edges of strange towns alongside sand and gravel
and the radio in my car lights green,
fighting to regain sanity, helpless,
all meaning down to a pulse, reason
is sick this morning, just a lost voice.

Somebody up the road from us has a logger cleaning them out...So far just a wide muddy path through the trees. I can hear the trees cracking and falling all day. I hate it. So close to home.

Your poem tells of much more, the bigger picture, really. I wish I had it in my power to change that, just can't figure out what that might.

Certainly a beautiful but haunting poem, it sure made me think.

And thank you for that.

I can relate to this poem so well. I have often moved to remote places to escape the concrete monsters that eat green, but they follow me. If I am understanding this as you intended then I understand the grief. People often find it odd that I do not want their idea of progress. I found this grieving and quite beautiful. I love your style and your clear voice.

Kinda haunting and penned well, always a great job on imagery, and impact. Nice pen upon this.

. oh, this is a journey ... one sees what's happening all around ... and it's almost scary ... the word grotesque comes to mind ... when "reason" is sick ... one wonders what it would take for it to recover ... a very, very powerful piece of writing ... superbly written ...

The last stanza is amazing.
And the imagery is so powerful.
Beautifully written.

a wonderfully written piece from a unique perspective. And so vivid. A massacre of pigs is such a strong image in my mind.

such a beautiful first line, i want to be of my hand! :P

the whole poem is strong, allows for paths to steal between the words, self-guiding paths that swell lulling with the reader's own voice. really good :)
