Two

Two

A Poem by Leslie Philibert
"

two poems together

"
There are two towns, one dark, one light,
divided by a border, two souls,
cleaved between night and day.
I stand bridged over the river.
Two lives, one child, one man,
cut from the same cloth, new and ancient,
with the double seeds of discontent,
a mirror image of the same torn history.
A man and a woman, together but divided,
standing together alone, with distance,
forced into looking for a second past,
shadows that fall upon themselves.
Two ways, one living, one not,
coming together, paths joined uneasily,
a start and a finish, strangers,
the water below failing to form a circle.

i am in awe of such eloquent, yet abstract writing. something i have never learned to do. i love that this poem conveyed such strength in human emotions and said so much about a personal and sensitive subject without revealing to many details. great write!

I felt a historical animosity being played out in this piece. Sharp contrasts and palpable tension.
Very well done.

somewhere between the darkness and the light, we are born and die

The sadness is in the failure to form a circle, the "I" in the first stanza must be disappointed as an abstract observer, in my opinion. Two states, "together but divided"..."two poems together"...
I enjoyed this, thank you.

. when an extremely perceptive poet writes an insightful piece of poetry ... an extremely enriching poem is born ... this is one such poem ... it answers many questions that a reader like me has about why people don't see eye to eye on many things ... brilliant writing, dear poet ...

i relish in the ambiguity of this piece, and how it reflects duality, without conflict, wherever such exists. i'm reminded of all towns, internal and external, that form this circle. as if one of the greats may have referenced, we all expand our divisions within our imagination, and it becomes the divisions that most unify us, "together alone".

the dichotomy of contrast, tension and reflection is creative and clearly expressed; some where between the lines or extremes the reader finds the equation of balance...
