The Mad Poet Attends His Own Funeral

The Mad Poet Attends His Own Funeral

A Poem by Leslie Philibert
"

a comedy

"
Plastic bagged with pork chops,
littered before a shop,
the mad poet fishes his lower jaw.

A black snail slimes up the main road,
one fat drummer punishes his gutbucket,
and the brass band plays not just slightly atonal.

Strange stop at traffic lights, churchbells hammering,
a van full of disinfectant snakes past, flags drip saints
as choirboys in trainers giggle.

He was a crazy b*****d, always talking to himself,
scribbling on litte bits of paper, looking for his glasses
and singing doodedoo as he sat on the toilet.

Death, madness--add a bit of underlying sadness--expertly portrayed and skillfully styled with a humorist's light touch.
High-level work, Leslie!

Very nice piece of work! Absolutely love the imagery and the character you create in such few lines.

I like the scattered train of though throughout this piece. Quite befitting to your title. I like the line "the mad poet fishes his lower jaw" --- nice touch of imagery right there.

Good job!

Well, this piece did what I love about great writing....made me re-read and made me smile...like the clever use of italics in the final stanza....I was with you on the journey here, and that for me makes a good poem....BB
Great comedy value here too....:)

Hahhah great poem! This is so creative, very unique. I love the title, that's what caught my attention. I love how everything seems crazy, and the last stanza is amazing. Great job! "and singing doodedoo as he sat on the toilet" hahaha

Brilliant. It is madness encapsulated. The last stanza ties all the previously disjointed images together perfectly.
