Departure in Winter

Departure in Winter

A Poem by Leslie Philibert
"

for Patrick

"
An apple split
by my own thumbs, a removal man.

You are an ebb distant,
a rustle of waves,
an upflight of birds,
now a migrant in ice.

When you cross the street
to your car, twenty years
and more fall from me, a closure
in dull light,winter`s tale.

I love the plethora of imagery in the second stanza.

I sense an approval of departure by the thumb( giving consent by a parent with the fingerprints thumb) or a hesitant or forced departure due to all the other imagery of coldness and winter. I hope both will find a closure. An excellent write, sir.....:)...............

The apple spliting, the stress of a child leaving causing the forced acceptance he's not little anymore. All the lovely images of life rising upward and onward and those child hood years fall away and time catches up. A very dramatic and human poem. Fantastic job on this.

Sometimes, as this poem describes for me so, we see ourselves reflected in our children, when we were young and realize time is really passing and that once upon a time baby is now a n adult. A very wonderful and well written poem.

Watch them grow, and then depart. Usually a mother's heartbreak. Valentine
