Reminds me of: We are wanderers on a prehistoric earth, on an earth that wore the aspect of an unknown planet. We could have fancied ourselves the first men taking possession of an accursed inheritance, to be subdued at the cost of profound anguish and of excessive toil. - Conrad
Leslie, this piece lets us see inside, just a tiny glimpse through slatted blinds. This short, compact poem is so very full of imagery. I can see the fluttering hands and I can see the inner workings. (My son has a friend with Asperger's, this kid is brilliant! He has so much going on inside, he just doesn't have the same tools we have to bring them out for all to see) This is a really, really good piece. Angi~
Oh, great...I so love the non-conformity here, especially the "listen to your own stolen voice," so important to an open experience. This is the ideal exploitation of poetry--condensed thought, packed with possibilities.
Leslie, do not apologize for your work. It IS important, and thus you are. Yes, I have battled all my life with such thoughts, but at least I can see them in others. Yours is a very powerful voice indeed, and I am the richer for it.
This is exactly what it is like, and you have given a beautifully written reminder... It is easy to lose patience with children with Asperger's, but we must remember that the world to them really is a puzzle, a "broken window full of stars..."
Having taught a number of sufferer's, I feel this hits the condition just so. but it places it in profound yet rich language that again lends an extra dimension to the condition. This is insightful and full of pathos but does not sink into the quagmire of pity and what if's. For that reason alone it would be aremarkable write but it goes much further. Using the medium to enlighten and not preach. I am very, very impessed with this.
I imagine it's hard living in a world having Asperger's... I think you capture this insight quite nicely... Well done... Looking forward to reading more from you.
There is so much beauty in this poem and so much truth presented for those who struggle to express themselves or are sometimes too concrete to express the abstract. I especially love the third stanza ("dancing hands," "stolen voice"). Beautiful poem! Thank you for writing it and sharing with us!
