Trapped

Trapped

A Chapter by Hannah

Run, we had to run. Why did we leave it so late. We were going to miss the rising. No. We couldn't miss it. Why had we gone to that last person. We could have just left it till next month. But no. We had to prove ourselves. Next time I wouldn't make the same mistake. That is if there is a next time. My breath came out in short puffs and my lungs were burning but we couldn't miss the rising.

I glanced to the sky we had only two minuets. Nearly there, nearly there. Suddenly I saw the flash. We were too late. But we were here in the field. Where we were meant to be. But we were a few seconds too late. That's all it takes. We all came to a halt. Terrified of what was happening. We were trapped. In a place. Where are kind was hunted. For a whole month.

I looked over at my two friends, I could tell they were thinking the same thing that I was. We were screwed.
"Can I be the first to say it" I said to no-one in particular "crap, crap, crap". Joshua put a reassuring hand on my shoulder. I didn't know who he was reassuring. Me or him.
"What do we do?" Tegan whispered.
She was terrified more so than me or Joshua. So was I but I couldn't show it. I was made head of this team for a reason.
"We go to the safe house and quickly and as quietly as possible, there's no point us staying here we missed the rising, they'll get a message to us as soon as they realise. Best to get somewhere safe for now." The others nodded.

I glanced up to the sky where my family was waiting for me, to place that I was separated from for a month. I had never felt so alone. I pulled my jumper sleeves down and put my hood up. I indicated for the others to do the same. We had to hide our glowing skin as much as possible. But luck was on our side. We made it to the safe house without meeting anyone. Thank God. I walked to the door and swiped my hand over the place where the key hole should have been. It opened straight away. I was so glad I paid attention in class back home when they were teaching us about the human world.

This safe house was nothing special. Four single rooms, one bathroom, a small kitchen and a small living room. Nothing special. We sat on the chair and sofa waiting. I looked out of the window. The sun was rising. We would have to go to bed soon. We were normally in bed for about 5am to wake up at about 7am. But this was not a normal night.

The hours ticked by and no-one said a word. We didn't want to miss any sign from the Overseers. Would they even try to help us at all? Could they help us? These questions darted round my mind for hours. But at around 3 there it was the image of a moon appeared on the tv screen. Quickly followed by one of the Overseers.
"Tegan, Joshua, Cassie; you missed the rising. Please do not panic cover-stories and aliases have been made for you. Because of you age and the current local calendar you have all be enrolled in the local high school. Your histories are being sent to you as I speak via the printer. One last thing, Good Luck."

That was it. We really were stuck here, all this time I had been praying that they were just going to tell us we could come home straight away, that there was some way to get us home. But we really were stuck. I walked over to the printer and handed out our ID's. we all got to keep our names, that had to be a bonus, I held mine close to me. This was my lifeline now. We were all in the same year at St Alexander's a small local high school in the area. We were to report to reception at exactly 8:20 tomorrow morning and begin our new lives for the next month.
