Inner Anguish

Inner Anguish

A Poem by Lena M. P.

Two men sitting on a stoop

Day dawning as the rush of cars drive by

Drinking coffee from Styrofoam cups

One old, one young, they discuss the weather

Air already warm before the sun has even risen

Not a cloud in the sky to promise rain

Old woman pushing a shopping cart passed the men

Old man nods his head as she shuffles by

All her belongings crammed into black garbage bags

Girl in scrubs waiting at the corner bus stop

Boy in jeans, backpack hangs off one shoulder

Looks about his neighborhood with hooded eyes

Yesterday’s newspaper lays abandoned on the bench

Headlines read Economy in Constant Decline

No change to the everyday existence in the inner city

We don't realize the full power of helplessness and despair, until we are caught in a situation, like this. Often, avoiding any mention of it, in our daily lives. Too involved in our own little worlds, to care about others' need. Thank you, for reminding us, of responsibility to all members of our community.

So much despair around us and often we are oblivious to it all! Or not, sometimes I wonder how we can like the world as much as we do lol Lovely poem xx

A very powerful poem. You have penned this with precision. Sad as it all is. Nicely done...

There's ennui here and just a sense of hopelessness, no doubt the source of the anguish. You are a gifted poet.

You have written this with such wonderful insight that I feel as if I am the fly on the wall. It is so vivid, down to earth, and yet carries a very powerful message from your observations of the normal day to day happenings of life!
Very nice poem!

It might have been a sad read, but I really well-written, well presented, well-thought-out read. I loved it from the start, where the two men are discussing the weather. I also love the fact everything is written as a story, simply in poetry form.

A pretty grim view of the current malaise in world finance. You get down to the local level, and the effect it has on communities. These are the forgotten people, the poor. Rather a sad read!
