Beware the Beast

Beware the Beast

Beware the Beast

Sitting in silence, the beast is alone
He dare not venture too far from his home
His hideous visage, he hides from the light
If only for his sake, it always was night

His pain you would see if your eyes did his meet
On rare occasion when he’s out on the street
There once was a love that entered his soul
Captured his heart that’s now black as coal

Her eyes were his beacon leading to port
His future, he hoped, held life of a sort
No other had seen him the way that she did
He wondered why so long from him she’d been hid

She calmed the beast, rested his mind with her song
He felt happy, he hadn’t for so long
Sunshine filled his life, the beast thought he knew
That’s how it would be all the way through

Sadly, my friends, that’s not how it ends
The beast with his heart, his lover, his friend
One day he awoke and her light, it was gone
He didn’t know why to her he’d been drawn

To feel all those feelings of love and of hope
The beast searched his house for an ending of rope
He’d stop all this pain once and for all
Time to go now… Why would he stall?

The beast is a coward, he can’t do it you see
His anguish and sorrow, he can’t set it free
He’d hoped he could one day find her again
He’d look in her eyes, absolved of her sin

"Too late for that now," the hideous beast groans
If you listen at night, you might hear his moans
Of torment and heartbreak, of things that won’t be
Adrift now in darkness on suffering’s sea

You darn’t approach the beast’s lair these days
He’s damned to be loveless, in agony’s haze
Soul withered, heart crumbled, a desolate course
He rots now alone, surrendered life’s force.

There is a childlike sing-song patter to this heartbreaking poem. I liked the emotion, but wonder if it could be more gripping had it not been so animated. He seems like a lonely lovable friendly beast. One a little tickle under the chin would make him grin. If you were going for a terribly depressed nearly suicidal type of gloomy character, I think you may want to shift it away from such strict rhyme every once in a while. Keep us guessing and make us feel the heartbreak.

This is like a version of my macabre fairy tale! It inspired me. I love the tale!
