Bad NewsA Story by Leigh BedfordThis is the introduction to a book I have started writing recently. I'm intrigued by how our experiences as a child mould us into the adults we become. This theme kind of runs throughout the book.It Kind of
just hangs in the air, doesn’t it? I remember
being six years old when I first really experienced it; excitedly tripping over
myself to get home from school as quickly as possible, my school bag jiggling
excitedly all the while. I’m Sprinting through the cobbled ginnel to our
terrace house impatiently, barging through the back door before entering the living
room expectantly and then ….bang. It just stops you. Dead. Everything
just slows down. For those first few moments you are detached from it yet inexplicably
controlled by it. People are talking among themselves in low drones yet
somehow the room is full to brimming with a thick silence muffling their voices
and restricting their movements. They smile
at you sadly. It’s oddly intoxicating. You have never experienced anything like
this before yet you know instinctively that this had to happen sooner or later.
Something in your life has changed; a light has gone out but this moment will
help shape you. It will stay with you for good…. Or bad. © 2013 Leigh Bedford |
