Children of Abraham (A Message For Moshe)

Through tears, something for the two year-old child found sitting by his dead parents with their blood soaking into his pants that were killed in the horrible Mumbai attacks. May God or Allah or whoever the hell is in charge have mercy on us all. :(

 

Children Of Abraham

(A Message for Moshe)

 

 

 

Moshe,

May you grow to understand

That all the children of Abraham

Have failed in their Father's eyes.

Each,

By their own design,

Believe that their way to be divine

And death for those they despise.

Think

Before you retaliate.

Fail to emancipate

The hatred that you will grow into.

Peace

Must come from within

Before you can begin

To relinquish the anger that you will hold onto.

Beget

Not the pain foolish, prideful men created

As they changed your innocence, now faded.

Leaving your parents' blood running cold.

Stop

And spread no further distress.

This cycle you must repress

When the urge to strike back takes hold.

Moshe,

Let Abraham sleep peacefully.

Do not live your life vengefully.

Remember always, but do not react.

Teach

His children and show them humanity

And perhaps someday, through your humility,

You will give them what they've forgotten back.

I think you need a comma somewhere in the final line but I'm pretty bad with those myself. Look, this is a very good piece. I find it hard sometimes to write something about religion or politics or anything of that nature without the piece becoming sentimental in tone. And I'm impressed how well this poem avoids that. I like how it is addressed to who I assume is a young child. I think the speaker sounds true to the topic and I think there is a lot of real wisdom here. The flow is immaculate and the rhyming sections work well. Very strong piece.

If there is power in a name then perhaps that child will be victorious. Moshe is also the Hebrew spelling of Moses (of course you probably new that). He was the great liberator of Israel, a prophet and a law giver. God's hand was upon him. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes of his war torn land, perhaps your Moshe will deliver his people as well. Yes, I am a bit idealistic, but what are we without hope? Your own words cry out for the hope of peace and deliverance. A pleading prayer to a small child sitting in the pool of his parents blood. A wonderful write.

This is such a sad, poignant and wonderfully written poem. My heart breaks for Moshe and all those, especially the children, that get caught up in the hatred that exists in this world. The message here, is full of truth. Turning a tragedy into something that could be a very strong and powerful learning lesson for all. I believe that this is a realistic possibility, and wouldn't it be such a beautiful miracle if it came to pass?
