On Writing Love Poems

Do not wallow

Within the shallows.

Let not "love"

Simply be equated to a "dove"

Or something to become

Nothing more than "ho-hum".

Do not think me cynical,

For if this be your pinnacle

Then shout it for all to hear!

A fitting tribute for one held dear.

Let loose thy language.

Unrestricted it will rage!

Running rampant,

Let adoration adorn the page.

Let the mind not conceive

Words inadequate.

Pen what the heart perceives,

Love burning passionate!

Possessed by said passion,

It should burn hotter than hell.

This is your moment.

Write it well.

Author's Note

Legion
Felt compelled to write this. After reading many love poems, I get the impression by quite a few that they don't really know how to truly express themselves in that sense. You must remember, this is supposedly the greatest love of your life. Don't settle for the mediocre! Find the right words to be the write words. I am not "dogging" anyone here for the feeling is a hard one to capture, but if you are going to do it make it memoriable (ck sp). Your "love" you speak of deserves it. You deserve it. Hope I didn't step on any toes here, but don't let that fire simply warm you. Let it consume you and consume you well.

Thanks for the input. I think that to write a truly great love poem one must have felt love in life...It cannot be manufactured or is falsehood will rise from the page. I have found that, when writing with passion, where I seek boldness and loud imagery, that I need to get in touch with my emotions and then let them pour forth. I still haven't written that one great love poem for my love...but I'll keep trying.

indeed so, 'fair maid was never won by faint heart'

and yes, do make it memorable... for 'few ever get a second chance to make a first impression'

that's not to say it's not going to happen, just the second time around may be even more of a challenge, remembering how you 'blew it' the first time

you may second guess yourself, and cause yourself to stumble rather than soar....

Well said Legion. Such a love should actually be so stellar that it is nearly indescribable in words, you know? So high above, that mere words alone would never do it justice. For in the absence of grand adjectives and fluff, how can one express it with simple nouns and verbs? This little piece, aside from what it was about, was very well penned. :)

I know you are right - loss control, shout it, - for one so controlled as me sometimes an impossible task.

Now, back to you - I am going back to read your love poems and find the uncontrolled splender of love!

A very enjoyable read, and one which I find myself in agreement with, even though I, myself, am at fault of some if not many, mediocre writes about "my" love.

Hmm, interesting bit of writing as well as the note. I agree whole heartedly that you should not settle for mediocre and that your "love" deserves it as much as yourself. I hope you are consumed.........PS(think you were correct about the "ck sp") ;) If I shout loud enough do you think he would hear, or would a whisper be enough? Am considering using part of that in a poem, what do you think? Good job Legion. XX
