Der Fuhrer's Song

Der Fuhrer's Song

A Poem by Legion
"

A piece I wrote in high school trying to compare the allure of Hitler back in Nazi Germany with the fascination that people have with rock stars today. Sort of.

"

Der Fuhrer's Song

Toxic,
White dust
Falls in line
Across the
Marble top platform.
(They are calling,
but for whom?)

Black,
Neon globes
Flicker
Somewhere in the
Background of this asylum.

The television
Shouts out a message
Of calmness
(Or was it madness?)
As shocktroopers
Parade, foolishly, across the screen.

A storm
(Lightning-Blitzkrieg!)
Rages outside
The barred window,
Pressing its blood-stained teeth
Against the pane

(Pane or pain?)

The walls move
To the marching of the video screen.

Threatening walls
That grimace in
Fear and Fearlessness.

A wasted youth
Slumps in the corner.

His eyes focus
On nothing
(And everything else).

A straw hangs
From his
Powdered nose.

His body twitches
Spasmodically
(Violently)
As he cries,
"Heil, Hitler!
Heil, Hitler!"

The Rock Star
Sings sweetly of
Peace!

His children,
His youth,
Are weary from his melody.

I was just paging through your poems and this one's title caught my eye cause it reminded my of a song "Der Fuhrer's Face" which happens to be nothing like this poem. Nevertheless, I read on and I think this is a very interesting dialogue piece. While it is not "pretty" in a romantic or verse sense, it establishes a connection with the reader which says, "do you see what I'm seeing?" which I think is precisely what you were going for here if you were trying to connect rock stars and Hitler. The notations in parentheses are what really give this poem bite. I'm glad I stumbled into it.

Keep writing, and I'll keep reading.

As a counter to the Rep remark below, though I hope not to detract from the piece by doing so... but it fits almost perfect so, can you pause for a moment - picture a certain Diva - and his crowd in Berlin?

This is kind of cool! You are right that rock stars have a "Cult of Personality." Also, there is the theory that you can't discuss anything on the Internet for longer than a few minutes (I think that was the number, perhaps 5) without bringing up Hitler. BTW, did you notice that Bush is kinding acting like Hitler with his Global War on Terror? Lmfao!

Great write. Am busy resurrecting my anthology to its former state of glory and onto new pinnacles of even more glory!
