Giants of the Earth

Stand within your shadow,
Give me comfort from the sun.
Feed me with your fruits,
When the season comes.
Keep the beauty flowing
Oh giants of the earth.
Hold this place together
With roots down in the dirt.
Shelter me from distress
As rain falls all around.
Reciprocate your kindness
By felling you to the ground.

Trees...
I live in a part of the world surrounded with both plantation and old growth forests alike. Felling trees is one of those dicey subjects that seem to draw out the kinds of fundamentalists that one would expect from religious circles... Yet there's a wide continent of middle ground that can be shared.

One almost wishes a poem like this could find its way and bring these people there - "feed me with your fruits, when the season comes..."
