Lost Within Our Hearts

Coping with loss, miscarriages.

The best of he and I,
Is what you would have been.
Certainly, you had become our joy.
And how fiercely we loved,
Whether you were girl or boy.

Your heart weakened,
Your strength dimmed.
So it was, lost to us you were.
Grieving all which would never be,
No comforter would dare to deter.

No longer with us are you meant to be,
To bring light to our every day.
You passed, not of your own choosing.
So as the world moves ever forward,
We feel our grip on you loosening.

If only you had a final resting place, Forever a home of your own.
Where we could waste away the hours.
Just imagining your face,
See your given name in stone.
Someway for all to know you were ours.

You were stolen away,
But we know who you are.
You are the miracle we made,
And immortal is what you became.
Because lost within our hearts,
For you our greatest love stays the same.

Yes, you are quite right. I could only imagine the pain of losing a child through a miscarriage before experiencing it myself. I never thought about how miscarriages were different from losing a child that has been born. It completely lacks the "normal" grieving process. There's nothing left to preserve the memory, no physical proof of their existence even. Life moves on and while others can visit a grave in honor of those lost, with a miscarriage you can only dream by yourself about what might have been. I hope others can gain some comfort from my poem. I certainly did from writing it.
