What Reality Is Worth Keeping

What Reality Is Worth Keeping

A Poem by Vertigo

"I think I am indifferent to lightness" I would say "For we see nothing but reflections and deceptions of reality"

"What reality is worth keeping?" he would ask

"Anything worth capturing in your camera lens" I would reply

"If I captured you what would I see?" he would ask

"Just a distant memory" I say "With an outline" and I smile...

My instant thought was nothing, nothing is worth keeping as from nothing we come and to nothing we go. And all that we are and accumulate, intellectually and emotionally, can not prepare us for our return from whence we came.

On second thought, that is a sheer reaction with which few wld agree as it seems to strip away our humanity. I wrestle with keeping the past. The older I get the more I want to keep shards of memory the closer and also live the more in the now. Maybe this contradiction mirrors how we are. It's how I am anyway.

On third thought, maybe our past is a key component of how we are and how we are determins how we live in the now. Ach, I'm in knots again! Your poem triggers thought. And so it works.

Confession. I read the poem blind to the word 'Reality'. I read 'What Is Really..' Hmm, what 'reality' tilts the meaning considerably, suggesting two people possibly at odds over how things were. And yes situation X is always capable of being interpreted differently, even by two people intimately invoved in X. Maybe the answer, is both versions of X have validity and are worth keeping.
