Welcome to the world.

A Chapter by Leah Kaiser

Darkness is everywhere. I can’t see. Everything is fuzzy and I can’t remember anything, including how I ended up... wherever I am. Wait, there is a faint sound coming from my left, but what is it? Afraid and confused, I try very hard to remain silent and still. The air is damp and warm, there is a faint smell that I can’t place almost as if something was burning but recently got put out or is it something else?

There is that sound again, coming closer this time. Shuffling, like someone is walking around. My heart is pounding and I finally attempt to move my legs but they’re so stiff and painful. Biting my lip so I don’t cry out, I try once again to look around. My eyes have adjusted and I can see the darkness everywhere but there is a slight light shinning through what looks like a door. Between the edges I can see someones shadow moving outside the door, I have to get out of here I think to myself. Grin and bare it I think as I move my legs onto the floor, ever so carefully. Then the sound was there again, at the door, keys jingling as the door flew open. Standing in front of me was someone I did not recognize. A tall man who looked to be in his late 40s, dark hair and bright blue eyes, were staring at me as if I were some strange animal. The man's stance told me he had authority and his face told me he was wise beyond his years. Small wrinkles on the side of his eyes eased my worries, at least he might smile often.

“Oh, good, you’re awake, I’m sure you’re hungry” said this strange man.

I tried to speak but nothing came out at first, as if dust had settled into my throat.

“Thirsty?” He said. As if he already knew the answer.

“Where am I?” was all I was able to muster before a coughing fit overcame my body.

“Hmm, I think we should speak on that later, lets get you better first”

In a flash I was angry at him, "I just woke up, I have no idea where the hell I am, I can't hardly walk for some reason, I want some answers!"

His face did not change emotions, his stance did not shift and, he seemed slightly amused.

"I will not speak about this while you're in this state of mind, lets get cleaned up first, food will make it easier."

What in the hell is that suppose to mean, easier? What exactly is easy about waking up alone in some strange place! Really, I didn't have the energy to fight on it. The slight blow up I had seemed to have drained me of what little life I had in me. So I just sighed and nodded.

I spent the next few hours being fed and given water, bathed and dressed. The rooms they moved me around too were all pretty much the same, white walls, light grey marble floors, all with an accommodating strange smell. The smell was so familiar, like bleach and flowers mixed together with a hint of rotting meat.

I was moved into a strange room full of bright lights everywhere, in the center of the room was just a long oval shaped table. The table was beautiful, small shapes and swirls were carved into it and all twelve of the chairs matched it. Sitting at the table, in the dead center was that same strange man.

“Well, you look much better. My name is Lex and I am here to help you, I know you’re confused right now but you’re safe. I am here to help you.”  His smile was meant to give me relief but for some reason it only made me nervous. "Please, come sit across from me so we can talk more." He put his hand out and waved it over the table, a signal for me to sit.

Shifting my feet slightly side to side I decided I should probably sit.

As I did, I took a moment to look around, there were two doors, one was the way I came in and the other was directly behind Lex. The walls were unlike the others, a bright spring green and the floor was a nice cream carpet. The smells in here were different as well, less bleach, more flower but still there was that rotten smell as well.

"So, lets begin, I will tell you about me first, how does that sound?" Lex asked me, almost to give me a choice only his face said I had none. Therefore, I merely nodded so he knew I understood.

"I am the director of this fine establishment and I have been for a very long time. I actually live on the grounds, so I can be closer to the ones who need me." He looked lost for a moment, then suddenly he stopped and went back to his neutral state.

"Thats enough about me, lets talk about you know."

“You came here two weeks ago, lost and bloody all over, talking in circles. You almost died, we want to help you find out what happened to you.”

"You have done nothing but sleep on and off, we have been keeping you alive with IVs and medication. You have been dreaming and talking in your sleep but nothing I can make out." He took a slight paused and tipped his head slightly to the side.

"Do you remember anything?" Lex asked of me.

This was when I realized; I had no idea who I was.
