Chapter 2: The Greed Of Man

A Chapter by Shu Ouma
"

The second chapter of my zombie apocalypse story. This is the last part of the prologue.

"Here's the documents you requested Rach. Maybe give me a heads up next time you want access to the more sensitive types of documents though. It was a pain in the a*s getting those guys in the lab to give up their precious babies. especially Daniel he always has a stick up his a*s for some reason." In a rather frank voice a man spoke, he could be no older than forty and with blonde hair and a rather large beard he stood out like a sore thumb. The man wore a green military uniform seemingly custom-tailored for his large exterior. His posture as well his various combat adorenments around his breast pocket hinted of his high military rank.

"Yikes, I know how tough it is to get those guys to give up their research. A month or so back, I took some of Daniel's test results on that other project he was working on and he flipped out."
As she said this, the woman sighed followed by a long chuckle. Major Rachel or Rach as she was usually called by her close associates was a fair-skinned female in her early twenties with large Indigo colored eyes. She had a long thick ruby colored hair that extended past her hips. Of course growing her hair to this point had been a pain in the a*s but she felt extreme joy whenever someone mentioned how lovely it was. Currently she was at a military base closer to the metropolitan area of New York City. She was stationed with her own private office area as a highly decorated Major. The room wasn't particularly large. It included a desk where she sat and did paperwork, a personal computer where she frequently found herself reading comic books, a large bookshelf where she stored all her materials, and a large window that displayed the rest of the metropolitan area. The view, she especially loved. Of course she had adorned the walls of her office with various posters and such within her multiple years of being stationed as well.

"Sorry for troubling you with this Joe, I really needed these documents! There's been this thing bugging me for a while. I feel like--"

"Well then, have a good day ma'm!" Whether it was because he had a busy schedule to uphold as well or if he didn't want to get caught in his superior officers tangent, the middle-aged man found himself leaving the young woman to her thoughts.[You could've at least heard what I had to say....and don't call me ma'm i'm only twenty eight years old!]

"Still...What the hell in the world does this mean". With a perplexed look on her face the major herself turned back towards the documents she had received. The contents had her flabbergasted. These documents were taken directly from the new experiments taken place in the facility geared towards erasing homelessness. In these experiments hordes of homeless people were taken to newly created facilities(Homeless Prevention Centers). On the outside, these facilities were supposedly places where the homeless could live in peace without fear of freezing to death or going hungry for free. However, on the inside, these facilities used the city's homeless as experimental guinea pigs for research regarding the creation of variety of good...and bad things. [Well that isn't so bad now is it. The useless homeless helping the country create cures and such rather than laying on the floor begging for change] . As she thought this, disgust began to creep into her very soul. She knew how inhumane the experiments that took place in this base for the last decade were. There were times when even the screams reached her office from the lower levels and yet she ignored them as if other human beings weren't her problem. [...If only his plan hadn't been approved at that time.] No, sooner or later Rachel knew that these experiments would occur.

"Major! We have an urgent issue regarding the quarantined research material in the third chamber!" A panicked man wearing a white coat frantically ran into Rachels office his spectacles swaying back and forth. Momenterarily shocked, Rachel regained her composure and questioned the man back.

"Uh, yes what about the third chamber? Give me all of the information you have now!" With a strained expression the young girl shouted at the panicked researcher. [Damn it, what the hell is going on.] While most of the experiments that went on in this facility were geared toward creating vaccines and cures. The fact of the matter remained that this facility was a military base and that there were also experiments geared towards creating biological weapons of mass destruction. Of course America was only one of the hundreds of large countries attempting to develop edges in this way of fighting. These times of peace would not last forever after all.

"Yes ma'm! As you already know we have been attempting to develop a biological weapon using the C-virus as well as human test subjects. While this has been kept a secret from most people within the base, we have a problem" With a horrified expression on his face Rachel could even feel the researchers disdain and panic.

"What are you getting at Jacob?! Are you saying that one of the researchers test materials has escaped?"

"Yes- and no ma'm. While we tested the C-virus on a variety of human subjects. All of them should have been locked away in quarantine. The problem is that there was a person who emitted the same symptoms as one of the subjects even though he had not been injected with the virus. It appears that Upper ranked officer Roger Rossi caught it after visiting one of the test subjects in secret! Apparently the cameras surrounding the experimental chambers were tampered with purposefully."

[Major Rossi...Why...He should have knew of the consequences.] Rachel, bit her lip fiercely, blood beginning to flow down her lower lip. Rossi was an old war veteran, a decorated hero with two children and a wife. [So...why] Almost as if on cue, Rachel came to a realization. Jim Terrence, a test subject used in these same exact inhumane experiments had been a close friend of Rossi's before he entered the army. Rachel had rememberer seeing this while looking at mountain of documents. [If that was the case...No, even if he told anyone there would be nothing that could be done. Once someone is infected with the virus there is no way to remove it! Damn it all!]

"Where the hell is he?! Dear God don't tell me he's headed back to his own house with the infection on his back!"

"We are sending agents out to look for him but the largest issue is that he doesnt know about the C-virus. While Rossi did know about the human experiments knowledge of the virus was only given to those of higher statuses such as you Major Rachel!"

"So at this point he's just a walking time bomb? As she said this a headeache began to radiate throughout her head.

"There's no time to waste lets go! Get all the right protective measures ready! It's regrettable but Rossi must be killed before it's too late...No...All we can do is hope we haven't wasted too much time already!"

At that point nobody knew but it had already been too late.
