The sound of a gun being shot echoed out. Jem heard it and
felt herself stagger into the wall before she even realised she'd been shot. She
felt cold as her body slid down the wall. She didn't see the glistening, red
trail she'd left behind. Her body landed on the ground with a thump. She felt
one hand cradle her while the other put heavy pressure on her chest.
"Jem."
She could see the silhouette of Jack. She tried to focus on
the detail but it was too dark and her vision was blurring. She tried to lightly
squeeze Jack's hand. She could feel her breath grow more rapid. She tried to
speak but her voice just rasped. She could feel her eyelids fluttering.
"Stay with me, stay with me Jem." His voice broke.
Was Jack crying? She tried to turn her neck to see but she
was exhausted. She squeezed his hand again before slowly shutting her eyes letting
the fight drain out of her.
