Knots in the bark

Knots in the bark

A Poem by LaurenEbanks

The shade seems to glimmer on the branches
of this lost tree. How lonely this poor creature must be.
To see the others bathing in the light and never
being able to join the crowd. How lonely.

It merely lies on the ground, its face transfixed
upon her. She must be a lost lover. Or a friend
that moved on. How lonely it must be to be left behind
the stones and creepers in this graveyard.

I wander the space between. This tiny cornucopia
that feels it has the right to separate him from
the others. It must feel so powerful, to have such
control over his life. A minuscule deity.

A wooden arm reaches towards the sunlight,
begging to be embraced by the holy light.
Begging the doors of Heaven to grant him forgiveness
for his transgressions and sins.

But the light never came. He merely wilted
away and broke down into dust. Lying
in his soft grave, waiting for a passer-by
to notice his gracious remains.
