What Are We Fighting For?

What Are We Fighting For?

A Poem by Laura Harrison

Despite the thousands of people

being portrayed as evil in the news everyday

I still believe

That there is a good side to everybody

And that all it takes

Is a little kindness

Shown towards them

To bring it out.

Maybe it’s just me

Maybe my heart just contains

Too much love

For my fellow human beings

But I can’t help believing

That the world would be a better place

If we all just started listening.

Because every person has a story

A dilemma, a plot twist

But no-ones willing

To uncover the mystery-

No, nobody wants to know

How anybody is doing

Because we all have

Our own lives to live

We’re all take and no give.

I want to live long enough

To see the world change

And I’m not that naïve

To think it can happen it a day

But I do believe that the day will come

When we finally care about everyone.

Because this pointless segregation

Can’t carry on forever

We should know by now

That it’s not all about

Sex, religion or colour

Yes, we should know by now

That things should be better.

And what has bombing countries

Ever achieved?

Why can’t we settle our differences

Over long conversations

And a pot of tea?

Because at the end of the day,

We’re not that different at all,

we all experience the same emotions,

we’re all thrown the same curveballs.

So why can’t we all just get along,

Put down our weapons

And end this war?

Ask ourselves

What are we actually fighting for?

I love your outlook & this is the kind of poetry we need right now. You have a nice rhythm here that would make a great spoken word piece. Keep writing. I'm enjoying reading. :)

Wonderful, yet again. Isn't it ironic how many people we see on any given day and ask, "how are you?" yet most of us don't genuinely care to listen to the response? Everyone just says, "I'm fine" or "I'm good, how about you?" because it is the POLITE thing to do; it is the thing we have been conditioned to do. No one ever says anything genuine anymore.

Bombing, invading and killing never does achieve anything but continues the same cycle of horror and misery that has been going on unimpeded for many thousands of years.
It would be nice indeed if that cycle could end.
Great poem, the world needs more minds like yours :)

A simple wish we all have - and there is a great price for peace to be paid.

I agree.
"And what has bombing countries
Ever achieved?
Why can’t we settle our differences
Over long conversations
And a pot of tea?
Because at the end of the day,
We’re not that different at all,"
I saw the bombed cities. War don't see the people who lost their homes. We need leaders who know history and know how to communicate. I agree. One people and one earth. We must get along.
