Us

A Poem by Laura Harrison

I didn’t realise I was in love with you

until you yourself said those three little words

and when you did,

it felt like God called down to me from Heaven

and said “this is it girl. This is what you’ve been waiting for.”

Because I have

I’ve always been waiting for you

like a mother waits to meet her unborn child

like the Earth waits for the moon

to come back around.

I just didn’t know that when we first met

I thought I wasn’t ready

to give anyone a chance yet

because everyone in life has let me down

and when the going gets tough

they’re nowhere to be found

but three years with you

is enough time to know

that you will always be holding my hand

no matter where the road takes us

you will always be North

when I’ve lost my moral compass.

And we’ve had our ups and downs

those times when it feels

like we’re coming undone

doesn’t everyone?

Yes, we’ve had those moments

where we’ve asked ourselves

“is it really worth it?”

And all it takes

is one look at each other

to remember that there will always be an ‘us.’
