Undress for Me

Undress for Me

A Poem by Laura Harrison

I want you to undress for me

not your clothes, but your soul

I want to see inside of you

I want to know what makes you, you.

So come over here

and lay with me on my bed

tell me everything that’s hidden in your head

tell me what it was like growing up as a child

tell me all the moments

that have made your life worthwhile

tell me about your family and friends

tell me about your ex-lovers

(yes, I want to know about them)

tell me what you like to do in your spare time

tell me the reasons you can’t sleep at night

tell me how you got that scar on your chest

tell me, are you glad that I exist?

Tell me everything, don’t leave anything out

I want to know what you’re all about

and if you want to know

why I’m asking you all this

it’s because I want to know

who I’m falling in love with.

Vulnerability is a trap, and one I dare not expose myself to. My heart is opened to no one. I will talk to you, but I will never tell you anything about myself, my problems, or my inner turmoil. Those things are MY issues and only mine.

Being vulnerable gets you stepped on, beaten, robbed, killed, etc. It's a silly thing to do, and I've long refused to open up or let anyone else in. Let people in if you dare, but don't be surprised when they destroy your life. Don't expect any apologies either. You won't get any.

Falling in love? Do people fall in love? I don't think so. Love is nothing more than a chemical reaction in the brain designed to achieve the continuation of the human race. What you call love I call a four-letter word of convenience. Good luck with that.

It's a good poem, but following the tenets of it is inviting pain, suffering, and loss into your life. Why deal with those things?

This was my fav piece of yours i have read so far tonight.
Rhyming was awesome.
I loved how you explained undressing the soul, not the body.
Loved every line. Was brilliant. Loved that read.

I agree. Love open all doors and leave no secrets.
"and if you want to know
why I’m asking you all this
it’s because I want to know
who I’m falling in love with."
I liked the set-up and the ending. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

sometimes closeness is kept at bay because of one's fear of opening up and being vulnerable... and it really isn't a trust issue, some have tried to outlive their pasts and others are not nearly as "forgiving" as they think they are.
