Writing the Better you Back to Life

Writing the Better you Back to Life

A Poem by Laura Harrison

It’s time for me to accept the truth-

I will never be able to stop writing poems about you

because you walked away and left me empty

until I discovered ink and some blank pages

so I guess these poems are my way of healing

even though sometimes it doesn’t seem to be working

but I will write and write

until all of this makes sense

until I can understand what was going through your head

I will write about all those good times we shared

back when you loved me

back when you still cared

I will write about our life together growing up

back when I believed that nothing could come between us

and yes, I know that I will never be able to change a thing

or make you regret your reasons for leaving

I know that I won’t be able to make you

come running back to me

or be able to see this situation the way that I see

I’m not that naive to think

that you could ever be the sister

who looked after me as a kid

because I realise now that it was all about you-

do you what you say, not do what you do

I realise now that you are not the person you used to be

but I can still keep that person alive in my poetry.
