We're all Human Beings

We're all Human Beings

A Poem by Laura Harrison

I want to start this poem off

with an apology

to everyone I have ever judged by their appearance

you see, like most people

I was brainwashed by society

to believe

that only skinny equals beauty

that blonde signifies dumb

that black means ‘thug’

but I am older now

I can think for myself

and I have learnt the shocking truth;

everyone is beautiful

hair colour doesn’t make a person dumb

being a certain race doesn’t make you a thug

and someone’s appearance doesn’t tell you a thing

and I understand

that people may not understand

people that are different from them

but if everyone looked a little closer

behind the mould of our body

and the colour of our skin

if everyone took the time

to get to know the person within

it would be like they were looking

inside their own mind

because we are all alike, in a way

we feel the same emotions

we share the same hopes and dreams

we experience the same things

but most importantly of all,

we’re all human beings

and not one of us deserves to get criticized or bullied

because of the way we look.

Now I want to end this poem

in the hope that I made someone think like me.
