Rest in Peace Rocky

Rest in Peace Rocky

A Poem by Laura Harrison

I said goodbye to you last night

after your seventeen years of life.

As I watched you lying too still

on that table in the vets

I couldn’t help wishing that you were just asleep

and that you would wake up at any moment

and lick my cheek.

When I got home,

the house was too empty

because you weren’t there

to say hello to me

and it used to drive me crazy

when you would bark at the postman

but I would do anything

to hear that sound again.

The squeaky ball that you loved playing with

is lying in the corner

and the blanket that you used to curl up on

smells just like your fur,

I keep expecting to see you fast asleep on the sofa

and I burst into tears again when I remember

that you are gone forever.

But then I think about how much pain you were in

your last couple of months

and I know it was for the best,

we had to let you go

but I hope you know that you will be missed

to the best dog in the world;

rest in peace.

A wonderful tribute. It is true that often the things that we hate when the animal is alive, we miss when they are gone. I miss brushing off my persian's fur, even though I cursed it every day.:)

I'm sorry for your loss. Pets become part of the family and we mourn for them when they pass away. It was great of you, though, to express your feelings in poetry.

Dogs are family so we grieve the same. I'm sorry for your loss

So sad. It is really hard to loose a beloved pet. I know this from experience. I certainly understand your pain. It's a lovely tribute to a beloved family member that may be gone, but not forgotten. Thanks for sharing this!

Wow, what a sad poem and experience to have to go through. I lost a dog many years ago but still remember him the way he used to be. I'm sorry you lost yours. I'm sure he's watching you from doggie heaven. :)

I want to cry reading this… never easy saying good bye to a loved one, of any species… pets do become family, sorry for your loss, this is a very touching way to send your poach to that doghouse in the sky.
