Now I Know What A Long-Distance Relationship Feels Like

Now I Know What A Long-Distance Relationship Feels Like

A Poem by Laura Harrison

We lie here in the same bed

but there’s a gap the size of Texas between us.

When I met you, everything was perfect

and you made me feel like my life was finally complete.

I used to have this dream -

where we’re on my mother’s couch cuddling like we normally do

then all of a sudden you slip right through my fingertips,

now I can’t remember the last time you touched me

it’s been so long since you caressed me so lovingly

so maybe you had the same dream too

and you’re just scared of losing me

because I can’t think of another explanation for this distance between us

I feel like an impostor in my own relationship;

like Bruce Willis in The Sixth Sense

when he doesn’t know that he’s dead

and he just thinks his wife is ignoring him.

But I am definitely not a ghost

because I can feel my heart breaking in two

every time I touch you, and you just stay still.
