Poem Addressed to a Dead Person

Poem Addressed to a Dead Person

A Poem by Laura Harrison

In the movies,

right before a character is about to die

their life flashes before their eyes

is that what it was like for you?

Or did you not even know

that you were about to die?

I think that most people

at some  point in their life

wonder what it would be like

to pass on

we wonder whether death

will be better than being alive

we have romanticized the idea

making death almost beautiful.

I hope that you weren’t

one of these people

because I don’t think anyone

really wants to die

some of us

just don’t think

there’s a better option

So what is it like

wherever you are now?

Is it everything

that you ever wished for?

I hope that where you are

is always sunny

and that there is a garden of roses

and that you are happy all the time

but most of all

I hope that you are somewhere

and that your spirit isn’t just floating around.

Beautiful write. This strung a cord with me. I have been in a dark place before where I openly welcomed it. Then, I was in a car accident that should have put me in a coma or... dead. I walked away from it. I knew then that there was something worth living for. Sad, that sometimes it takes something like that to wake a person up. I really enjoyed this write!! xo (:

Its really moving.
The whole idea of death as an art is enticing, yet kind of foolish.

streets of gold gates of pearl trees that bear 12 fruits at a time never sleepy or tired
river of life flows gently down the middle rose gardens blooming trees that smell so sweet
any food you want to eat

Ahh, this is so painful. Having lost several people I loved to suicide, I can relate.

Blame the 27 club. People think dying is an art. You can't achieve anything when you're dead. Nicely written.

We do romanticize death, and we always wonder. You've got this spot on if you ask me, and i really did touch me. I think it's very realist, great job. xo

Poignant and potent thoughts that I think everyone who has lost a loved one asks...moved me x
