False Signs

False Signs

A Poem by Laura Harrison

I can’t help looking for signs

that you don’t love me anymore

my mind tells me

that you fall asleep a lot

because you’re getting bored of me

not because you’re actually tired

and you watch too much TV

not because you love the movie

but because you hate spending time with me.

Yet you whisper “I love you” while you’re asleep

and put your arms around me

when your eyes are on the TV

I guess years of self-hatred

have got to my brain

creating false signs

that you hate me the same.
