Safe Place

Safe Place

A Poem by Laura Harrison

When you found out about my self- harm,

you held my wrist and placed gentle kisses on every jagged line

and you promised me that you would always be there for me-

especially on days when I didn’t want you to.

I never thought that I would be able to tell anyone my secret without then branding me as a freak;

I never thought that I would be able to tell anyone without them running away

but you gave me the will to get better,

you gave me a reason to stop mutilating myself.

I would be lying if I said that it was easy from them on

because the next couple of months after that were hell

and the temptation to pick up a blade was as strong as it ever was

but I always had you to stop me from taking the plunge.

And I know they say that you should never make homes out of people;

but you are my shelter when the storm is raging inside of me,

my safe place when my thoughts become deadly-

you give me the strength to continue to breathe.

you know this is directly from satan trying to make you feel un worthy but you know that isn`t true
so don`t let him convince you other wise look who created you

I love the line that says "And I know they say that you should never make homes out of people"....it's very well spoken and deeply filled with emotion. I know that with my significant other.....he's what makes me feel at home......

And I know they say that you should never make homes out of people;
but you are my shelter when the storm is raging inside of me,

How lovely that you have someone so supportive. Truly a beautiful poem.

A great poem, an amazing insight, a tremendous burden. One thing for sure, the strength to go on comes from within
