I Am Fat

I Am Fat

A Poem by Laura Harrison

I am fat

I know this because I see it when I look in the mirror

And I hear it in the cruel calls of

“Look out, here comes the whale!”

All my life

People have treated me like I wasn’t a person

Like I was some sort of a monster

Or like I’m not worthy of love

Because of the size of my waist

But I realized a long time ago

That I shouldn’t be defined

By a number on the scale

Because I am more

Than just how many calories are stored in my body

I am fat

But I am happy

That's it Laura. You said it exactly. You are happy, I know it is really painful to be called those harsh words but atleast you aren't someone who deprives herself with food that you can see her bone through skin. Acceptance of yourself and the people you love the most is all that matters, loving yourself is the best way to heal those scars they had left. Chin up high and show 'em who's boss! :)) You go girl! :)

You go girl
This pie e is just inspirational And amazing
We shouldn't treat people or rating them by numbers or calling them names
You don't have to starve yourself just to be happy
You have to be happy in your own skin
What I really like about this piece was that it got the message across clear
Thank for sharing :)

This is really good. This is a common problem nowadays especially with teenage girls. What's important is that we are happy, no matter how we look. As quoted, "I am fat, But I am happy" :) society should never define us, nor our height, weight or looks. we define ourselves. Great write! :)

Wonderful expression of strength! I've always thought it to be so very contradictory for society to preach universal acceptance, but when it comes to weight, we all should fit within a certain ideal. Again, I applaud your courage!

Glad that the voice is happy with who she is today. Happiness really depends on what are the priorities in life of a person.

"That I shouldn’t be defined
By a number on the scale"

I remember how depressed I was when I was having a bigger body (size). But my eagerness to lose weight motivated me to try different ways on how to decrease in size. That's my inspiration why I wrote a funny article about losing weight...it's because I am contented and happy now that I have achieved my goal. Besides it adds to one's confidence when she can see herself better than yesterday.

But I never told my story to compare what we have done and felt. I am really happy for someone who's contented in life, because with contentment there's happiness.
Nice poem. Keep writing.
