When Someone You Love Is Suicidal

When Someone You Love Is Suicidal

A Poem by Laura Harrison

My boyfriend is suicidal.

When chopping vegetables for dinner, he always holds the knife a little too close to his wrist

And he keeps a gun underneath his bed, not to use against house intruders, but for when he finally decides to silence the demons inside his head

When I asked him why, he told me that suicide is the only thing you can control in life and that he wanted to beat God at his own game.

So he always puts his seat belt on when he’s in the car

And he looks both ways when crossing the road.

Because he does want to die, but only on his own terms

When he cut himself last night on a broken piece of glass, I believed him when he told me that it was an accident

Because, honestly, I don’t think that he really wants to kill himself.

He just wants to believe that there is another way out of the hell that he is living in.

So I will hold him and tell him how much he means to me

And I will plant kisses on every inch of his body and hope that my love is enough to drive the demons away

Because I read once that "you can't save people, you can only love them."

Not bad. Very true about the last part "you can't save people only love them." I agree. And I like the part about how he doesn't really want to die he just wants out of hell. Good kid, I liked this one a lot.

This poem was actually so creative and real and just beautiful. I didn't expect to be so into it when I began to read the first few lines. Love the part when you speak of when he wants to die only on his terms

Fantastic piece! How do you cope when someone you love so dearly is already planning their departure from life, from you? If they are thinking about the end already, how can they truly enjoy the journey? Excellent poem :)

I'm relieved this is only a muse - and yet you wrote this so well that I thought it was real.

So true - you can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved.

Great writing

"you can't save people, you can only love them". Great poem! For me what makes it really great is the perfect ending.

Wow, you've written this so well that I actually thought it was real until I read your note... at least it's not, that's good but wow, this is amazingly well written.

It is the only right thing to do, loving them. One cannot do more. Thank you for sharing this, it's moving and holds a beautiful message.
