If I Dated Someone Like Me

If I Dated Someone Like Me

A Poem by Laura Harrison

If I dated someone like me,

Our evenings would be spent curled up on the sofa with a book in our hands

And we would write each other sentimental love-notes whenever we were apart.

On road trips, our favourite albums would be playing full blast

And we would never have to argue about what movie to watch

But half of the relationship would be spent with both of us crying because we believed we weren’t good enough

And we would constantly threaten to break up with each other.

Every time we came across a blade, there would be a temptation to use it for desperate ways

And the dark cloud of depression would be hovering over our heads all of the time,

Making it impossible for us to be happy together.

If I dated someone like me,

I don’t think I could handle it

Insight is an interesting perspective to write from. This is a brave piece that opens up you for all to read. It is a flowing and sad piece. Hopefully you can move from insight to accepting life is what you put into it. If you put in doubt and self misery that is what you may get out.

Excellent! They always say that we are our own worst critic. Perhaps, that's because we know ourselves better than anyone else ever could, and the "worst" critic inside of us is just being honest. I think your words speak honestly and true. If we were all honest, we'd probably all decide not to date ourselves. That's why love is love. It loves because it loves, knows nothing other than love, and forgives all things. Love makes us beautiful in the eyes of those who love us, accepting all of our imperfections. Nice job!
