Dad, Don't Shout

Dad, Don't Shout

A Poem by Laura Harrison

Dad, don’t shout

I’m trying my best to make you proud

But it doesn’t seem to be working

When you shout so loud.

Dad, don’t shout

You know you hate to see me cry

Whatever I do never seems good enough for you

Please won’t you tell me why?

Dad, don’t shout

Can’t you see that I am sorry?

I never meant to be a disappointment

I didn’t mean to make you angry.

Dad, don’t shout,

I don’t want to be scared of you

It hurts me when you raise your voice like that

And it leaves me feeling blue.

Dad, don’t shout

I promise I will make it all ok

This world is such a big, old place

In which I’m just trying to find my way.

This stutters a little and the repetition of the first line in each stanza feels unnecessary. The sentiment in it and the pleading and mix of love and sadness come through very well.
