Do Not Look For Me

Do Not Look For Me

A Poem by Laura Harrison

When I die,

Do not look for me at the bottom of an empty bottle;

Or mourn for me on the barstools of shady back-street bars.

You will not find me haunting our favourite spot to watch the sunset

So don’t go looking for me there.

Don’t stay awake all night hoping to find me standing at the bottom of our bed

And don’t try to chase me in your dreams.

Do not stand at my headstone and weep-

As my soul will not be withering away underneath the dirt and soil.

Don’t go trying to keep me alive by playing memories of me

For your mind will always replay the day I pass away.

When I die,

Don’t you dare search for me behind the pearly gates of Heaven…

Because I will always reside in your heart.

Indeed...for 'tis the heart that is most important in life....
This sends out a message of philosophy and love that captures the reader and sends home the message that life is indeed a series of encounters with our hearts.....and others that dare cross those paths to our heart....
Thanks for sharing and look forward to reading more of your work on here....

"Don't you dare search for me", you really got me with that line, and I love how you followed up on it with something gentle, "I will always reside in your heart". Nice contrast right there.

I about cried while reading this. Made me think of my father.

There's also a strong feeling that this is the narrator's last goodbye. It's similar in theme and tone to something I might write when in a terrible state...

Thanks for sharing this one.

A flowing prose poem with a rather sinister theme for one so young. It does have pathos and reads well although I felt the penultimate line in need of crafting.

This was beautiful. I loved it. Our loved ones should always be kept in our heart. xo Winter

This made me want to cry because I immediately saw the person it made me think of while reading. Thank you for showing me that they'll always be with me, even though I cannot seem them. ♥
