Your Pain Is No Worse Than Anyone Else's

Your Pain Is No Worse Than Anyone Else's

A Story by Laura Harrison

It’s a sad fact in this world that everyone is hurting in some way or another;

Whether it be because of break up’s or never being loved,

Suffering from an eating disorder or self-harm.

But I know people who like to compare their pain to other people and say that theirs is worse, making you feel as if you don’t have the right to be hurting because they are too.

Or they invalidate people’s struggles because “they got through it fine.”

Pain should not be comparable; everybody’s hardships are real and just as difficult as everybody else’s

And it’s hard enough to live with pain without people telling you that it’s not as bad as theirs

So I think that instead of treating pain like a competition, we should help each other to wade through our struggles because it’s tough when you’re crying alone in your room with no-one to turn to, because the only people you thought you could trust told you to “get over it.”

But if we all came together as a unity of broken people, perhaps we could each help to put someone back together.

I agree with this 100%. We all have our degrees and limits of pain and we all need to realize that pain is pain. It affects us all. Instead of complaining it would just be best that we all be there for each other to help comfort each other, not something like, "Oh, that's not so bad. I've been through worse, so get over it." Well written. xo Winter

It reads a little bit more like a section of thoughts than a poem, but I did enjoy reading your thoughts. And I agree with them. Pain is a funny, indescribable thing. There is no way it can be compared or judged, it is just there. You can simply express that it is there and then people react as they will. One can only hope, that if people don't try to understand that they can at least accept that it is there. I think accepting that it does more to making someone feel better.
That and a pat on the head.

I actually categorized this as a story, not as a poem, I felt it was something that really needed to.. read more
A truthful write, and a really nice one at that.

Nice write. Sometimes, the worst part is becoming cynical when to people who need actual help, compared to those who just cry for attention.

I completely agree, we should all just help each other out. No matter how hard it gets, no one should tell someone to just "get over it" they should help them. I completely love this poem. Congrats on success :)

i completely agree with the sentiment! i've suffered a lot in my life, and have lost many friends who not only were not compassionate, but at times cruel with their words and deeds. when people tell me "it could be worse", i reply "of course it could be, and i've had it worse"...but that does not discount the current struggle. if only people could say kinds words such as "i'm sorry you're hurting right now, is there anything i can do?" or simply make a nice gesture by BEING THERE for the person. but, it's rare these days, sadly. thanks for sharing this. WRITE ON!
