Change Yourself First

Change Yourself First

A Poem by Laura Harrison

You always talk about changing the world;

But what you seem to ignore is that you are a walking hypocrite.

You complain about how people should be more loving and generous

Yet your heart is as cold as the snow in winter.

And I can’t remember the last time you helped someone without helping yourself too.

Your eyes recognize that everything is black and white in this world and you use your mouth to remind everyone about it

But your brain and your heart have a layer of dust over them from lack of use.

So instead of changing the world, change yourself;

Learn how to listen before opening your mouth,

Look in the mirror before you point your finger,

And start being the loving and generous person you wish everyone else to be-

Because you may only be one out of 7 billion people on this Earth, but you could make a big difference if you tried.

So wipe off that layer of dust from your brain and your heart;

Bring some colour into our world.

I love your line, "Look in the mirror before you point your finger". Often, we can be hypocrites without even realizing it. We can become so caught up in ourselves, it's hard for us to imagine that there might just be a reason someone is the way they are, or does the things they do. Sometimes, all we can see is ourselves. We often don't realize that someone is doing the best they can, and the last thing they need is to be judged. We judge them so we can feel better about ourselves. We point fingers at others so we can feel comfortable where we're at in life, and so we can avoid the darkness, and ugliness inside ourselves. I think you portrayed this wonderfully. This is a beautifully written, and prolific piece of writing.

This is very good advise Laura. More people should read it. Some of us do this very thing, we walk the walk...so to speak, but not everyone wants to be recognized for doing the right think. But you have a very good point, not everyone does what they tell everyone else to do.
