From A Man To His Insecure Girlfriend

From A Man To His Insecure Girlfriend

A Poem by Laura Harrison

You look at everyone around you and always think that they are prettier than you

You are always worrying about how you look compared to others

But imagine seeing yourself through someone else’s eyes;

What if they thought you were the most beautiful woman they had ever laid eyes on?

Because that is exactly what I think when I look at you

I wish you would believe me when I tell you that you’re beautiful

And that you wouldn’t push me away when I touch your body

I wish you wouldn’t cover your face in vats of make up

Because it’s not Maybelline that made me fall in love with you

You are worth a lot more than the number on the scales

And the Photo-shopped women in magazines that you look up to

When I met you, it felt like all the stars suddenly became aligned

You are the reason that I get out of bed in the morning

You are the reason why I still breathe

So I don’t care that your face is covered in spots

Or that your teeth are a little crooked

I just wish that you didn’t care either

In my mind this is one of the most romantic writes I have read in a long time. No makeup necessary, no hiding a stretch mark or an extra pound....you just love her and you see her through the eyes of love. So precious....so touching. If only we could see ourselves as those we love see us. Just gorgeous. Lydi**

This is beautiful! Its ashamed that we only see the flaws we have , if only we really could see ourselves through someone elses eyes just once ! Amazing poem

If only those we love could see themselves the way we see them...This reminded me so much of my daughter and her "gawky" years. Your poem is heartfelt and lovely.

Like the idea but I feel like it's too straight forward. You have a habit of putting a lot of weight on the last line and I really like that. Try to show more imagery. Make the poem unique.

Wow. This is so moving and beautiful. Honestly, my own boyfriend could have written it for me. I'm not the most insecure person, by far, but neither am I the most confident. Sometimes I get down thinking about all of the women he could be with that are more attractive than me (silly, I know, but I like to torture myself I guess). And it's good to keep in mind how silly that is, that a connection goes so far beyond stupid, manufactured ideals. So, thank you, this is a great piece, and sincerely well written. :)

How sweet and how true. We shouldn't worry about what others think. After all, beauty comes from within.

Real women are just that, real. There is no perfection out there regardless of the outer beauty pushed down our throats by media. We are a culture obsessed with some unrealistic idea of what beauty is. Real is beautiful and as the man said beauty is only skin deep- there is so much more beyond the physical.
