A Poem For All The Boys Who Tried To Save Me

A Poem For All The Boys Who Tried To Save Me

A Poem by Laura Harrison

You treat my depression like it’s some project for you to tackle,

But know that every sweet nothing you whisper in my ear will only make me loathe you

As I want to be the one who tells me how perfect I am.

If you are trying to make me feel something, then it isn’t working;

Your fingers can’t do magic tricks-

They won’t make me feel any less hollow by stroking my spine

I refuse to sink like all the ships that were designed to swim

But I don’t want you to be the anchor holding me down.

My parents once told me that happiness comes from within

And I’m pretty sure they didn’t mean,

“From within arrogant boys looking for the next best thing to get bored of”

I guess you believe in all that fairy-tale bullshit about how women are damsels in distress

Well, listen up, honey

The world has moved on from princesses and dragons,

So I don’t want you to be my knight in shining armour.

I don't know. Good to be saved. Good woman have saw my weaknesses and pick me up. A interesting poem. It is a new world. But we need support and help sometimes. I have three daughters and five sisters. I warned the men. Be careful. Woman can be demons too. I enjoyed your thoughts. A very good topic in the poem. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.

I really liked this one. I very much love the idea of the girl telling herself that she is worth it and not someone else. Very empowering.

Wow, that's telling them...oh wait, I am one of them. Often we feel it is better to deal with thses things on our own, we hold them inside, away from prying eyes hoping this will help soothe the situation. Sometimes I guess it does, but sometimes knowing someone cares can make all of the difference in the world. Very nicely done.

this poem isn't about the boys who care though... it's about the ones who romanticize sadness

don't be sorry. everyone is entitled to their own opinion :)
You are right, none of us can be saved, we must save ourselves.

There is a large amount of anger in this poem. I wonder if you are focusing on turning a corner in your life where it moves from "Boys and Girls" to Men and Women" or maybe you just found a way to get that pesky old box of stuff out of your head and onto the page.

Sometimes we need others to help us, sometimes we need to help ourselves. I just want to say that I have never seen a knight whose armour shines. Everyone has flaws but recognizing them makes the man or woman inside stronger. Good writing

Well, there are things that no one can do for us.... being able to realise what we really want is one of them...

Your inner strength really comes out in these words and phrases. The feeling made me smile while reading it.
