If I Were A Mathematician I Would Say That Distance Is Just A Long Number

If I Were A Mathematician I Would Say That Distance Is Just A Long Number

A Poem by Laura Harrison

It took Emperor Shah Jahan almost 22 years to build the Taj Mahal

Yet I can’t wait 5 months until I see you again

We Skype late at night until our eyes get heavy with sleep and fatigue

And even then I lay awake in bed,

Picturing you beside me drawing patterns with your fingertips on my naked back

Just like you used to do when we weren’t separated by 2,000 miles.

I read a quote once that said that books are for people who wished they were someplace else

Well, I wish I could open my favourite novel and get transported straight into your arms-

But unfortunately, life isn’t that simple.

I want to feel your soft, warm lips pressing against mine

I want to get lost between the bed sheets with you,

And if these sheets were states, then I would be in yours right now

It has been said that when Penguins find a mate, they stay with her forever.

So if we were penguins,

You would have had no choice but to take me with you when you moved halfway across the world.
