What To Tell Your Daughter About Boys

What To Tell Your Daughter About Boys

A Poem by Laura Harrison

Tell her about the boy on the football team

And how he is hoping to score more than just points after the match

Tell her to focus on her academics

Because what college would accept a 17 year old with a baby?

Tell her about the boy who will pretend to be her best friend

And how he will ditch her when she doesn’t do anything about the bump in his pants when they hug

Tell her to tell him that just because she invited him out for dinner

It does not mean she will invite him back to her home

Tell her about the boy who will control her every move

And how he can twist “I just went to the shop for bread and milk”

Into “I’m having an affair”

Tell her to run as quick as she can

Because there’s only so many times you can use the excuse “I fell down the stairs”

Before someone gets suspicious

But don’t forget to tell her about the boy who will put the stars in her sky

About the boy who will make her want to climb Mount Everest and scream “I’m in love!” when she go to the top

Tell her about the hopeful look in his eyes when he asks for her hand in marriage

And make her believe that even after all the heartbreak and tears;

Love is worth it in the end

I like how you made the last stanza the stanza of hope in a way. But this poem is definitely truthful, and i have been to all of these stages. It really just freakin' sucks, but I am still waiting for the guy of the last stanza. Only thing keeping me alive really. :) Great write. I loved it.

Despite all the negative things that you have mentioned about boys, it's a good thing the last stanza resurrected the dignity of the he-creatures. Blissful read. :)

I feel like this poem could be SOOOOO amazing..... Like, make a mother cry amazing. But I feel like you're too straight forward and not detailed enough. Make this poem longer. This is the kind of topic that will keep people interested. Make it longer and spice up the vocab. Really try to show the pain with your words choices. I swear I'm not trying to be mean. I just see potential in this and I really want you to keep working on it.

Educative and inspirational.
There should be someone who will teach the skills of survival.
Love the lesson of finishing school.

AMAZING poem! this is such a truthful piece and It's very relatable to not just me but several girls.
I absolutely love the last stanza...it's very optimistic and I'm pretty sure a lot of girls are waiting for the boy you described there.
