What To Tell Your Daughter About Boys

What To Tell Your Daughter About Boys

A Poem by Laura Harrison

Tell her about the boy on the football team

And how he is hoping to score more than just points after the match

Tell her to focus on her academics

Because what college would accept a 17 year old with a baby?

Tell her about the boy who will pretend to be her best friend

And how he will ditch her when she doesn’t do anything about the bump in his pants when they hug

Tell her to tell him that just because she invited him out for dinner

It does not mean she will invite him back to her home

Tell her about the boy who will control her every move

And how he can twist “I just went to the shop for bread and milk”

Into “I’m having an affair”

Tell her to run as quick as she can

Because there’s only so many times you can use the excuse “I fell down the stairs”

Before someone gets suspicious

But don’t forget to tell her about the boy who will put the stars in her sky

About the boy who will make her want to climb Mount Everest and scream “I’m in love!” when she go to the top

Tell her about the hopeful look in his eyes when he asks for her hand in marriage

And make her believe that even after all the heartbreak and tears;

Love is worth it in the end

I like how you made the last stanza the stanza of hope in a way. But this poem is definitely truthful, and i have been to all of these stages. It really just freakin' sucks, but I am still waiting for the guy of the last stanza. Only thing keeping me alive really. :) Great write. I loved it.

This is sweet. I love the concept, perhaps what you've learned from your mother, or what you expect from her...
Well-done!

Oh this is so sweet if largely cynical about us poor 'boys' who also suffer similar fates part from the bump! I have the scars to prove it!

This was so very affecting. Being a father, my daughter is the eldest of my children... I often find myself afraid for her. The good of the world seems to only be shrinking, your piece has reminded me to share that bit of hope with her as well. Very lovely piece.

This is both a senstive and more than heartfelt write. Seems the words come from the heart, full of emotion throughout, but, more than anything - has extraordinary quality and courage. Hope is beautiful when it ends with 'happy ever after' - as this truly appears to be. Wonderful!

I love this poem! Too flowery words can cause danger to people (except when you write poems). Girls aren't the only mysterious ones but boys as well. There's still hope in love and I'd note that in mind! Thank you for sharing such an amazing poem! :D

Wonderful, is what I honestly think. I laughed aloud reading the first part, became serious as I read on, very serious about the boy she would meet, who would beat.....and then tears came when you remembered, in this poem the very important ending. A very good mother, giving her best advice for her daughter and written very cleverly. Thanks for this, I will keep this for my grand daughters to read.
