The last chance for salvation

The last chance for salvation

A Story by Laura Ataeva
"

A horror flash fiction story

"
The city is captured. Wherever my eyes go, they are everywhere - on the streets, atop overturned cars, on the rooftops of high-rise buildings, behind shattered windows of apartments. Chaos reigns around me. Where can I run away from them? Where can I hide? They will want to convert me, they roam the city in search of the last unconverted. They will understand I'm not one of them. Another moment, and they will turn their attention to me. A sudden thought crosses my mind: what if I could fool them? I quickly bend over to the flowerbed at the curb and scoop a handful of earth. I smear my face with the mud, I should look as slovenly as they do. Not far from me, I can already see some of them who noticed me and began hobbling towards me. I need to keep my cool. I get up, twist my body to one side and slowly trudge toward them, limping, mimicking their movements. They stop in their tracks, confused, and study me. I start to emit inarticulate sounds like the ones they do. They blink, three seconds and they begin to walk past me. I tricked them! But suddenly out of nowhere two large Rottweilers rise in front of me. They bare their teeth and look at me. Their noses are smeared with blood, their eyes clouded. They are also converted. And they are sniffing. A dog's sense of smell is much keener than a human's. I freeze in horror. Dead Rottweilers growl and rush towards me. So do the rest of the living dead around me...
