The Devil's Phone Call

The Devil's Phone Call

A Story by Latoria Sheppard
"

Ever wondered if you got the call from hell? I have...

"

BRRRR...

My cell phone rung in my ear as I laid stretched across my king size bed and something inside told me not to answer it. The days leading up to tonight was nothing exceptional; however, it all played its significant part in the ringing of the phone. As I looked at the caller ID nothing appeared on the screen--no number, name, or picture. It just sat on the nightstand ringing with a deliberate agenda.

BRRR...

I have trained myself to ignore outside noises from entering into my mind for fear of receiving irrelevant and unnecessary information. I have blocked people out my whole life and went just off of what I knew or believed to be true. This method has allowed me to not be distracted from my personal agenda in life. It has allowed me to walk through the doors which sat ajar for me to enter. Yes, I probably have did a lot of things in my life I should be ashamed of and/or have a guilty conscious about; but what would be the point if all I have now was the benefit of someone else's demise? I have riches, wealth, power, and fame all at my fingertips. I do what I want without regret or remorse and there will be no apologizes for my behavior and no change in my status in the near future. Yet, my cell phone continued to ring and that same something that told me not to answer was creating an itch to which needed scratching.

BRRR...

I looked over at my cell phone one last time and decided whoever it was really needed to talk with me for whatever reason and I then felt obligated to pick up the phone an greet the unknown caller with a sleepy,

Hello...

May I speak with Latoria Sheppard" The voice did not have any emotion behind the words, no urgency or anger, no joy or happiness. The voice did not have any distinctive characteristics to alarm me of the nature for the call; which continued to leave me guessing.

This is she...may I ask who is calling?

Well that could depend on who you want me to be...I've been called many things throughout the years Satan, Lucifier, etc.

I held the phone away from my ear and looked at the device as if it was a joke. I laughed in the ear of my caller whole-heartedly and decided to play along with whoever was on the other end, I asked "Well, this is very unexpected. What is it that I can do for you Mr. Satan?"

A chill ran through my body and the phone in my hand lit up with a red light. I became curious the more I held the phone and a certain emotion washed over my body as the caller took a deep breath...fear!

"Well...What I want is still to be determined. I want a lot and to my fortunate showmanship the world is giving it to me one individual act of sin at a time. With greed, lust, fornication, drugs, lack of faith, etc I have become more powerful throughout time and I am quite grateful. I am calling you especially to show my gratitude.

My heart started beating to a beat unfamiliar to myself, my mind raced, and disgrace stung my ears.

Well, Satan you are quite welcome; but I have to ask what do you mean?

The caller who called themselves Satan chuckled with delight as my own breathing became heavier.

Your life is my golden ticket to riches. The dirt, hurt, denial, destruction, and pain you have caused throughout the 25 years you have been alive has given me great pride. The day you were born I targeted you to be my child. I marked you for a life of sin and you have not forsaken your birth right. I am a proud fan of your work. The loneness...

Before the caller could finish his sentence I hung up the phone. I jumped out the bed and ran to the nearest bathroom which stationed itself in far end of my walk in closest. I threw water on my face and looked in the mirror trying to wake myself up from the reality I knew was just a dream. Unfortunately, the dream did not end with a splash of water and my phone began to ring again.

BRRR...
