A Chapter by One Lost Anti-Hero

My name is Kurokami. Just Kurokami. I woke up from my horrid apartment just like any other day thinking humans are just 99% noise, but that one percent could override it if held in the right hands. A large ruckus arose outside this pathetic shelter, but I took care of it with ease. It was a group of humans fighting for something called life, but I cured their sickness. Knowing that this pitiful place I called my temporary home would be in shambles when I returned I ate my breakfast quickly. It consisted of water and a loaf of bread I bought the day before. My home smelt of fumes and charcoal from yesterday’s idiots because they decided that killing me would give them a life or something, but instead death took them away. Thinking that a radioactive home isn't the best place to be in this type of situation, I went out to a nearby convenient store to get some groceries. I got the usual; a loaf of bread, peanut butter, black coffee and milk, then headed for the hospital across town. I stopped in front of an empty home that seemed to be in ruins from an attack. The windows were shattered just like the city streets flowing through the endless abyss of silence and even worse it seemed to have red juice dripping of the side of the home.

“I guess someone was naughty.” I thought as a cheeky smirk came upon my face.

Most people aren't around this early in the morning, but for safety reasons I went through the alley. Since it was a thirty minute detour I knew that I wasn't going to be late to meet her since she is probably still asleep. It was a beautiful alley filled with broken dreams and lost souls that fed my joy as I strolled through the empty alley. On the way I saw many cats that had been abandoned by society and I couldn't help but give them half of the loaf of bread because, unlike humans, cats can read nature rather than looks; which made them the perfect pets. I opened the hot coffee and chugged the whole thing down without a single care. I couldn't feel any of the heat nor could I taste it, even so I enjoyed these simple treats because is made me more human. I finally arrived at an abandoned hospital and noticed that the window on the fifth floor was open.

“That idiot.” I immediately headed for the stairs and blazed through each step upward. I ran as I hard as I could fearing what would happen if I were to see what was in that room. Upon reaching the floor I paused and begun to walk slowly towards room 509. When I reached the well lit room I stopped for a brief moment to touch the ground hoping that there wasn't a dirty human inside. I only sense one person in here which was good.

“Papa if you’re going to come in you might as well be delicate about it.” A young girl’s voice came from inside the room. I opened the door and saw an eight year old girl lying on the hospital bed. “You treat me like a prisoner and always leave me by myself when you go do stuff.” The girl pouted then reached for the remote to change the channel, but nothing to watch except for the news or dvds lying on the floor. “It’s not fair I want to be with Papa and Mama!” Relieved that nothing was wrong, I decided to take a break and eat my meal.

“I have peanut butter, bread, and milk. And drop the papa, my name is Kurokami, Lily.” I dropped the groceries on the bed, but kept it away from Lily and that made her eyes lit up with excitement as like a child on Christmas. “But you can’t have any.” Lily took the food regardless of that fact that I told her that it wasn't for her. I went to close the window since the wind blew into the room making it hard to think, but then I noticed a man standing on a building a couple of blocks back. The man had a black violin case that he held close to him as if it were a fragile package and wore a shirt covered in pink flowers, light brown shorts and sandals. He seemed to be older than most humans, yet younger than most military sheep nowadays. He set the case down on the ledge and begun to build something inside of it.

“You don’t put together a violin right?” I thought that something was off about the man, but what was it? The man lowered a case to reveal a sniper rifle and as he adjusted the scope his eyes were locked onto me. He aimed the gun directly at the room and began to look for his target. “Damn it we've been found already.” I immediately told the girl to take cover, but she was too busy chugging the milk down her throat to notice.

“Get down Lily!” I slammed the window shut and flipped the bed on its side. My heart was racing to see what this man would do as I held the girl close telling her to be quiet, but she ignored my order.

“Papa what are you doing?! My snack is ruined now.” She frowned as the sandwich she had just prepared was now part of the floor. Great we’re in a dangerous situation and she’s worried about her sandwich, lovely.

“Quiet. We are being targeted by that man.” I wondered what reason did this man had and also how we were going to get Lily another sandwich, but her safety was more important than simple trivia. “Damn he probably had sight of me for a while, but how did I not notice him.” Holding Lily close in my arms I desperately tried to come up with a plan to escape. The man let a couple shots fire through the glass alerting that hiding was pointless. Shattered glass flew across the room, but I managed to cover head keeping it safe.

After a minute of silence he fired once more this time it grazed my neck. The man stood there waiting for us to make a move like a vulture upon a dying animal, but he wore a calm face unfazed by neither his actions nor ours. Suddenly I heard the vibration from my cell and since I had only one person on earth who knows my number I quickly answered it.

“Kurokami, shooter found, Lily?” The woman’s voice was monotone unlike the girl beside me.

“Shes fine. Say hi Lily.” I gave the phone to Lily.

“Hi mama, Papa dropped my sandwich and he pushed me.” I immediately took the phone back, but it was too late. I could sense the fury coming from the phone.

“I-I did push her but it wasn't because I wanted to. That guy shot at us and…”

“Kurokami. True. False?” Another bullet shot through the wall this time slightly above Lily’s head, but she was too busy pouting to notice. I immediately grabbed and placed her in my lap so that if the bullet did get her it would hit me first.

“Just rest here until mama can think of a plan okay? If you’re a good girl I will get you as much pbj you want.”

“With milk and jelly?”

“Yes with milk and jelly.”

"Yay!!" She nodded her head excitedly. I continued to talk on the phone and to my surprise she sounded pretty stumped.

“Fly Kurokami.”She said after a few minutes I hated flying. It was something that I had despised since I was able to unlock the ability. When I flew it wasn't like normal flying creatures it was painful. It etched its way into my body and destroyed everything that mattered. My heart felt on the verge of collapsing and my mind felt queasy. “Fly three okay?”

“But…”

“No buts.” I felt broken that I had to use it, but if it’s for her I guess a little pain isn't so bad.

“On three I want you to run into the hall, understand?” I told Lily as I tried to put on a brave face for her. She held my hand tightly hoping that everything was okay. I gave her a pat on the head to reassure her that everything was going to be fine then she followed my instructions without a single complaint.

“Don’t hurt yourself papa.” I heard faintly as I knocked down the bed revealing the window.

“THREE!” I yelled and Lily made a mad dash for the hall as I tossed the blanket into the air to block the man’s sight and leaped out the window. As I fell from the fifth floor a dark sand-like aura began to cover me. It was warm like a blanket wrapping around my torso before exploding out releasing two demonic like wings before I hit the ground. I floated to the ground without a single issue and I knew that I had to distract him enough to focus on me instead of Lily or Sal. I took off and increased the span of my wings attracting his attention. The wings were covered in patches and made my chest burst out in pain stopping its beat. “Damn I’m still not used to this even after six years.” I soared through the air gently as if I was lifted by the gods, but my chest continued to be in pain. I headed straight for the sniper dodging the man’s fire with ease, though my sight was beginning to blur.

The man halted his fire for a second before pulling the trigger. Even though I was swiftly soaring through the air, I was still hit dead on by that last shot. It hit my chest just barely missing the heart, but the impact was enough to knock me out of the sky. No matter what I did I could feel the pain envelope me.

“All up to you Sal.” I thought as I plummeted to the ground hitting it head first. It was a cold feeling in my chest, like my heart had hit absolute zero and that nothing would change no matter how much I fought it. In the corner of my eye I saw the girl standing at the entrance of the hospital saying something, but I was too far to hear.

The man watched as Kuro fell onto the ground before immediately adjusting his weapon so it was aimed at the girl, but she stood there in tears watching the boy fall. The man didn't know what, but he saw something frightening inside her and knew that he had to shoot now.

“Judgment.” The girl who looked exactly like the target, but was around twice her age, asked as she stood behind him with an army knife held up to his neck. The man was surprised to have not noticed the woman walking past his security and reached for his handgun on his belt, however it was missing.

“Gun?” She shot both his knees and aimed it at his head. Her eyes a seemingly endless void as she stood above her prey with no remorse. The man closed his eyes awaiting his fate knowing full well that this was the end. He heard a metallic sound being thrown off the roof and the girl stood there watching for his reaction.

“Atone.” She grabbed his right arm stabbed it with the knife. The knife went through his palm as the man cries echoed through the city, but was heard by no one. She stood watching the man unresponsive to his scream before taking out the knife and stabbing it through his stomach. Her face was colder than ice and as the man began to pass out from blood loss he realized that he had been hunting the wrong target. The girl left leaving behind the shell of a human on the roof. "Hate Human." She said before climbing down the ladder on the side of the building.

“Come on body move just a little. I can’t allow you to give up because of these minor injuries.” I tried once more to lift myself, but was only able to stand on one knee. My vision began to blur as the darkness was engulfing my sight, however I heard a cry not too far from where I was. I was able to make shape of someone running towards me, but they were so far away that I couldn't tell who it was. “You fell further into the darkness, didn't you?” I asked before finally collapsing from the pain of struggling. As I lied there barely conscious in the ally; the nearby cats surrounded me trying to ward off the person.

“No worry.” The voice was similar to the girl in the hospital, but it was a lot emptier.  Her body was relaxed and soothing as she moved closer to me. The cats fell silent as the girl tried to leave without saying a single thing. “Wait me.”

“Why don’t you answer any of the questions I ask you? Why do you avoid us when we can just stay together?” I yelled as loud as I could, but like always her reaction was the same, cold and empty. I grabbed her leg with my right arm while the other was on my chest. “I won’t let go that easily.” I tried as hard as I could to keep the girl there, but I knew she had other intentions of staying. “Even if I’m a monster you should help stay with the child."

Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you are proved right when you speak and justified when you judge. Answer?”

I knew what she was saying, but didn't understand her meaning behind it. I thought long and hard for the answer, however it was hidden quite well. I felt so powerless against this girl and that I couldn't reach her no matter how hard I tried. My hand let go of her leg and my mind became light as my body had finally given up.

“I monster. You husband.” She covered the boy with an emergence blanket, kissed him on his forehead which was covered in black blood, and left without a single word.

I love how action packed the first chapter is. You really grabbed my attention and left me wanting more. I like how you're building the personality of Kuro. His POV is really interesting too. All in all, I think this is a great first chapter.
Some suggestions...
Something about the first sentence is bothering me. I think it would leave more of an impact if you divided it into two sentences. So instead of "My name is Kurokami just Kurokami." it would be "My name is Kurokami. Just Kurokami." I feel like that might kind of show his personality a bit more.

When you switched POVs where it says "Final rule" I was a bit confused. I suggest staying with one POV the entire time. It just makes it seem more realistic. Especially since this is in first person, I really think you should just stick to Kurokami's POV.

I guess if I had one more thing to say it would be to keep showing and don't tell. You've done an amazing job. This is a great first chapter!

I realized why I added the wrong thing to it. I forgot my prologue for this story.
Hi Tony.
This is really well written. I love the characters and they are very well done. I'm curious to know more. That's a great sign.
If you can, read this out loud. I'm not sure if it will help, but I think it might help you catch so one of problems. You have a couple of places where you could use commas or periods.
How big is the room they're in? They're on the 5th floor, right? How is it that the guy is able to shoot and aim so easily from that angle?
The room number was 309. Most buildings numbers correspond with the floor. 509 might be better.
The biggest thing that threw me was the sudden change in POV (Kuro, 1st person to Assasin, 3rd persobln) at the final rule. You should use a line break to show that you're shifting prospective or continue in the same POV. Is something keeping Kuro from watching the last bit?
In all, this is a good passage. You have a lot of skill.

What is a line break?

Just a break of white space. Or a line or asterisks that let the reader know you're shifting gears.
