Behind the Mask

Behind the Mask

A Poem by C.R. Moore "Lasla"

I have a mask
To hide my fears
My mask
Comforts my soul
Conceals my tears
Contains my fears
A smile becomes a frown
You shall never know
When or where
I have hidden
My heart
Behind my mask
I tried to hide from all
That hurt me and took away my smile
Hoping from behind
This mask of pain
Pain could bear
No more upon my face
My hearts deepest intent
Until my heart met you
But could not hide from you
When your are near
My smile becomes
More profound
My tears fade away
From within my mask
Joy becomes my mask
Broken love made my mask
Alas It was love that set me free
For the world to see
Me without my mask of pain

Very good choice concerning the repetitions - they sort of "envelope" your poem into a mask... I can't be clearer... That's the impression I had. The repetitions have the reader get lost - lost into words...
Just like a mask which shows and hides at the same time. Your words show something - and hide another thing...
Very interesting...

I like the imagery here; especially your ending where hope arrives and the mask turns to one of joy. Your poem is a great metaphor for the way that we tend to hide our true selves until we feel safe in a relationship or situation. Very nice work.

This is stunning work, Lasla. The symbolic 'Mask' does indeed hide the pain, yet inside the hurt remains. The transformation here is exceptionally contrived as that special someone comes along that allows one to break down the barrier, and the mask goes from pain to happiness. It takes someone very special to do that, eh? Oh, yes! Love does set us free...

Lovely.
